Lewis Gifford was the resident of 40 Proctor Place in 1918.   Mr. Gifford was the secretary-treasurer of the Oakland Coal Company.  The 1920 Census listed Mr. Gifford, his wife Laila and their daughter Ann along with their live-in maid Mary Topp. The 1921 city directory listed Louis Berman of Berman & Fain and propriators of the National Credit Clothing Company located at 424-26 Summit.  His wife was Dorothy Berman.
