2038-40 Collingwood

Workers pose for this 1889 photograph at 2038-40 Collingwood Avenue. Shelley Green and Andy Chermak donated this image.  Built in 1887, 2038 was home to John Barker in 1891 of Barker & Dwight which sold coal from 317 Superior.  In 1896 Samuel Hopkins lived here with the help of domestic Fronia Billmeyer.  The 1900 city directory listed the resident as Sinclair Berdan who was in the wholesale food business.   Martha Henschel, a live-in nurse, was also an occupant.  Roland Spitzer lived here in 1912, while  Natalie Spitzer, then his widow, lived here in 1918.  Fama Fiser was her live-in domestic.
